Besançon has one of the most striking sites in France. The river Doubs bends in an almost complete circle, and the historic centre fills the inside of that loop. From above, the medieval and classical streets form a dense oval surrounded by water. The only gap in the loop is guarded by a steep rock, and a citadel stands on top of it.
The citadel was built by Vauban in the seventeenth century and is now part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing of his fortifications. Its walls and bastions appear on the map as sharp angular lines against the curves of the river. Across the water, newer districts climb the surrounding hills of the Jura foothills, and bridges link them back to the loop.
