Kaarta
Bochnia lies in Lesser Poland, roughly forty kilometres east of Kraków, where the lowland meets the first hills of the Carpathian foothills. The town grew around salt: the Bochnia Salt Mine, opened in the thirteenth century, is among the oldest in Europe and is now part of the UNESCO-listed Royal Salt Mines, together with Wieliczka.
On the map the medieval layout is still legible. A large central market square sits at the heart of the old town, with streets running out from its corners. The Raba river passes to the east, and the rail line and main roads between Kraków and Tarnów cut across the landscape, giving the town a clear east–west orientation.
A Bochnia map poster shows how the historic square, the surrounding blocks and the later housing estates fit together. Above ground there is little sign of the tunnels below, which makes the calm surface pattern all the more interesting to those who know what lies underneath.

The historic mine shafts sit close to the centre. The workings run deep beneath the town, and the mine is part of the UNESCO-listed Royal Salt Mines.
To the east, the Raba winds through open land, its meanders and floodplain drawing a soft natural line against the town's straighter roads.
