Kaarta
Bourem is a town in Mali's Gao region, on the left bank of the Niger River near the northernmost part of its great bend. Here the river, after flowing northeast from the inland delta, swings southeast toward Gao and on into Niger and Nigeria. The desert comes close on the north side, while the floodplain gives a narrow band of green.
From above, the town is a compact grid of sandy streets and flat-roofed houses laid out along the water. The river dominates the composition, with channels, islands and flood areas that shift through the year. Beyond the settlement the lines thin out quickly, and the empty ground of the Sahara takes over the page.
A Bourem map poster shows a rare meeting point, where a great river runs along the edge of the desert. In black and white the contrast becomes almost abstract: dense streets, broad water and a vast, quiet expanse beyond. It is an image that holds its own on any wall.
Bourem sits close to the northernmost point of the river's course, where the Niger turns southeast. The broad curve of the water is the defining line of the map.
Sandbanks, channels and islands split the river into several strands. Their shapes change with the seasonal flood, and on the poster they give the water a layered, braided look.
North of the town, the built-up area ends abruptly and gives way to open Saharan ground. That sudden emptiness makes the dense streets along the river stand out sharply.
