Brak Map Poster
Brak is an oasis town in the Fezzan, in south-western Libya. It lies in Wadi ash Shati, a long east-west valley where groundwater allows settlement and farming in the middle of the Sahara. From above, the inhabited land is a narrow ribbon, and the desert begins almost immediately on either side.
The town's streets are compact and roughly gridded. Around them are palm gardens and irrigated fields, including circular plots created by centre-pivot irrigation, which appear on the map as sharp, perfect discs. Roads follow the valley and link Brak with the other oasis towns spread along it.
North of the valley is a stony plateau, and to the south are the dunes of the Ubari sand sea. A Brak map poster shows how small the inhabited area is within that emptiness, a clear line of human settlement across a very large landscape.
