Buhe lies in the south of Hubei province, on the broad Jianghan Plain that the Yangtze and Han rivers built up over thousands of years. From above, the land is almost completely flat. The built-up area sits among a patchwork of rectangular fields, drainage channels and small ponds, with few hills or ridges to shape it.
The town grew along the roads that cross this farmland, so its streets tend to follow straight lines and right angles. Near the centre the blocks are denser, with shops and housing close together. Further out they give way to village clusters and farm plots. Waterways run through much of the surrounding land. On a black-and-white print they appear as fine, repeated strokes.
