Caicó is the main town of the Seridó region in the interior of Rio Grande do Norte, in Brazil's semi-arid sertão. On a map the town is a fairly regular grid on low, open ground beside the Seridó River, which is often dry for much of the year. Just outside town, the large Itans reservoir makes a broad, irregular body of water.
The centre is laid out around its church squares, with straight streets extending outward in a checkerboard. Caicó is well known in the Northeast for its July Festa de Sant'Ana, one of the region's biggest religious festivals, and for Seridó's food traditions, including carne de sol and local cheeses.
