Celaya lies on the broad agricultural plain of the Bajío in the state of Guanajuato, and its map reflects that level ground. The historic centre is a tight grid of colonial blocks around the main plaza, with newer districts spreading outward in larger, more regular patterns. Railway lines cross the city, a reminder of its long role as a junction in central Mexico.
The city is associated with the architect Francisco Eduardo Tresguerras, born here in the eighteenth century, whose Templo del Carmen remains its best-known building. Celaya is also famous across Mexico for cajeta, the caramel made from goat's milk. In 1915 the surrounding plain was the site of the Battles of Celaya, a turning point of the Mexican Revolution.
