Chittaranjan is a planned township in West Bengal, on the border with Jharkhand, built around the Chittaranjan Locomotive Works. Established around 1950 as a railway manufacturing centre, the town was named after the independence leader Chittaranjan Das and has been producing locomotives for Indian Railways since its early years.
Unlike most towns in the region, Chittaranjan was laid out according to a plan. On the map it appears as a series of residential sectors connected by wide roads, with the large industrial complex of the works forming a clear block within the township and green spaces spread between the housing areas.
The township is known for its tree-lined roads and open, orderly layout, and the border with Jharkhand runs close by, with the town of Mihijam just across it.
