Colón covers Manzanillo Island, a low, compact piece of land at the Caribbean end of the Panama Canal, and from above it looks almost engineered. The old centre is a tight rectangular grid. It was laid out in the 1850s, when the Panama Railroad chose the island as its Atlantic terminus. Docks, container yards and breakwaters press in on it from every side.
The city was founded as Aspinwall, named after one of the railroad's backers, and later took the name Colón, the Spanish form of Columbus. Long avenues run parallel to the shore and are crossed by numbered streets. The pattern is easy to read even at poster scale, and water shows at the end of most roads.
To the south lies Limón Bay and the approach to the canal locks at Gatún and Agua Clara. The Colón Free Trade Zone spreads its warehouses right beside the city. Limón Bay
The sheltered bay south of the city leads ships toward the canal. On the map it is a broad expanse of water with breakwaters, anchorages and the canal entrance along its edges.
The Free Trade Zone
Rows of large warehouse blocks sit next to the older city. The Colón Free Trade Zone is one of the largest free zones in the Americas, and its layout is visibly more industrial.
