Dhamār lies on Yemen's central highlands, south of Sana'a, at an elevation of around 2,400 metres. The town occupies a wide, fairly flat basin, and on a map its streets spread out in several directions across open ground rather than being constrained by valleys. Farmland and dry fields surround it on all sides.
The main road between Sana'a and the southern cities passes through Dhamār, and it has long served as a stopping point on that route. The surrounding plateau has a volcanic character, with cones and lava fields scattered across the landscape. The old town at the centre is denser, with newer districts spreading around it.
