Dilling lies in the northern Nuba Mountains, in Sudan's South Kordofan state. From above, the town occupies lower ground among scattered rocky hills and ridges, and the streets spread across the flatter land between them. Roads leave town through natural gaps, and seasonal watercourses leave faint marks on the surrounding plain.
The town is one of the main centres of the northern Nuba Mountains, and it is home to the University of Dalanj, which serves the wider region. The hills around it are part of the Nuba homeland, an area of many communities and languages, and the landscape has long shaped patterns of farming and settlement.
