Dongta lies in Ningxia in northwestern China, on the flat land along the Yellow River. The region is dry, but for centuries canals drawn from the river have turned this strip into productive farmland. From above, that effort is still visible as long, straight channels and neatly divided fields.
The town's streets form a fairly regular grid, with wide main roads and blocks of housing and workplaces. Around it, the pattern of irrigation takes over. Canals run parallel to each other, and fields are subdivided into rectangles that continue until the land turns to desert and hills.
