Dorbod lies in western Heilongjiang, in northeast China, on the wide Songnen plain. From above, the town is fairly compact, with a mostly regular street pattern and a few main roads leading out across very flat land. Around it, the landscape is open, with grassland, farmland and many shallow lakes and wetlands spread across the region.
Dorbod is the seat of the Dorbod Mongol Autonomous County, part of Daqing. It is one of the areas in Heilongjiang with a significant Mongol community, and grassland and livestock farming have long been part of local life. The nearby lakes and wetlands are home to birds and give the region its distinctive watery landscape.
