Drancy lies in Seine-Saint-Denis, a few kilometres north-east of Paris. From above, it is a tightly built suburb on flat land. Small houses on narrow plots fill much of the town, broken by larger housing estates, schools and sports grounds. Rail lines and main roads form strong boundaries, and nearby Le Bourget airport sits just to the north.
The town is known for one of the saddest chapters of French history. The Cité de la Muette, a modernist housing block, was used during the Second World War as an internment camp from which most Jews deported from France were sent to Auschwitz. A memorial and a museum across the road now mark the site.
