Ermont is a commune in the Val-d'Oise, in the northern suburbs of Paris. Its identity is closely tied to the railway. Ermont-Eaubonne station is a junction where RER C and Transilien lines meet, and the tracks divide the town into distinct sectors. Neighbouring Enghien-les-Bains and its lake lie a short distance to the east, and the wooded rise of the Montmorency forest lies to the north-east.
From above, Ermont is almost entirely built up. Nineteenth- and early twentieth-century streets of detached houses mix with post-war apartment blocks, and every road that crosses the town has to find a way over or under the railway. The rail lines form strong, sweeping curves, and the residential streets on either side knit into a dense, irregular mesh.
