Ernst Thälmann Island, known in Cuba as Cayo Blanco del Sur, is a low, narrow cay off the island's southern coast. It is elongated and slightly curved, with an irregular edge of mangroves and sandy shoreline. It is uninhabited and has no roads, so the map shows only a thin shape set among shallow Caribbean water.
The island's name comes from a symbolic gesture. In 1972 it was renamed after Ernst Thälmann, a German communist leader, during the friendship between Cuba and East Germany. The story is still sometimes mentioned as a Cold War curiosity. Otherwise, the cay remains a quiet coastal island.
