Fāqūs is in Sharqia Governorate, toward the eastern edge of the Nile Delta, where cultivated land begins to give way to the desert approaches of the Suez region. From above the town is a dense cluster of streets surrounded on every side by fields, canals and drains laid out for irrigation.
The urban core is compact and closely built. Lanes run in several directions and meet at small open spaces, and roads and rail line lead outward toward neighbouring towns in the governorate. Canals run along several edges of the town, with their straight lines and gentle bends showing how water is distributed across the delta.
