Foumban lies on a plateau in Cameroon's West Region, surrounded by rolling highland countryside. Foumban is the historic capital of the Bamum kingdom. The palace was built in the early twentieth century under Sultan Ibrahim Njoya, who also created the Bamum script, one of the few writing systems invented in Africa. The town is known for its craftsmen, particularly bronze casters and wood carvers, whose workshops have made Foumban a centre of Cameroonian art.
