Geleen Map Poster & Print
Geleen lies in the south of Dutch Limburg, close to the Maas and the Belgian border, and is part of the municipality of Sittard-Geleen. From above, the town is made up of several older village cores that grew together, with residential neighbourhoods and green belts between them and the valley of the Geleenbeek running through. To the west, the Chemelot industrial site covers a very large area.
Geleen's modern form dates from the twentieth century, when the Dutch state mines opened the Maurits colliery here and the population grew rapidly. When mining ended, the chemical works that had grown up alongside it became the core of Chemelot, which remains one of the largest industrial sites in the Netherlands.
