Gemas lies at the south-eastern edge of Negeri Sembilan, close to the border with Johor. It is best known as a railway junction. This is where the east coast line, often called the Jungle Railway, branches off the main west coast line, and the station and tracks sit at the heart of the town.
The town's streets cluster around the railway, with a small commercial centre of shophouses and residential areas beyond it. The surrounding land is mostly plantation country. Its regular rows of oil palm and rubber stretch across the gently rolling terrain in every direction.
