Gießen lies on the River Lahn in central Hesse, about an hour north of Frankfurt. It is above all a university town. Justus Liebig University, named after the chemist who taught here in the nineteenth century, shapes the city, and in proportion to its size Gießen has one of the largest student populations in Germany.
On a map, the clearest feature is the Anlagenring, a ring road that follows the line of the old town walls and encloses the centre. Much of the historic core was destroyed in 1944, so the streets inside the ring mix older lines with post-war rebuilding. The Lahn runs along the western side of the city, and university buildings are spread across several campuses.
