Gif-sur-Yvette lies in the Yvette valley in the Essonne, southwest of Paris. From above, the town sits in two layers. Down in the valley are the river, the RER B line and the older village streets. Up on the plateau to the north are research campuses and newer neighbourhoods. Wooded slopes between the two levels leave a green band across the map.
The town is closely tied to French science. It hosts a major CNRS campus and is part of the Paris-Saclay university and research cluster that has grown up on the plateau.
