Gongtan is a town in Youyang County, in the mountainous south-east of Chongqing Municipality, on the banks of the Wu River. From above, the setting is dramatic: steep, forested slopes rise on both sides of the river, leaving only narrow bands of flatter ground for streets and buildings.
The town is known for its old quarter, a river port with stone-paved lanes and traditional wooden houses, some built on stilts. When a hydropower project raised the level of the Wu River, the old town was relocated and reconstructed on higher ground.
