Gualaceo lies in the province of Azuay in the southern Andes of Ecuador, east of Cuenca. From above, the town sits on a valley floor beside the Santa Bárbara River. The centre follows the orderly Spanish colonial grid around a main plaza, and steep green slopes rise on both sides, dotted with farms and small settlements.
The town is known for its crafts, and the surrounding area has a strong tradition of ikat-dyed paño de macana shawls, as well as shoemaking and fruit orchards.
