Gurun lies in southern Kedah, on the lowland just east of Gunung Jerai, the mountain that rises alone above the surrounding plain and has long served as a landmark for sailors along the coast. On a map, the town appears as a tidy cluster of streets beside the main north-south road and railway, with open agricultural land stretching away around it.
The mountain and the Bujang Valley archaeological area on its southern side give this part of Kedah a deep history, with remains of early trading settlements dating back well over a thousand years.
