Herstal lies directly downstream from Liège, on the Meuse. From above it is defined by water. The river and the Albert Canal run next to each other along the valley floor, with docks and industrial sites along their banks, while the residential streets climb the slopes to the plateau above.
The town has an old name. Pepin of Herstal, a Frankish ruler and great-grandfather of Charlemagne, is linked with it, and the Carolingians had an important residence here. In modern times Herstal is known worldwide as the home of FN Herstal, the arms manufacturer that shaped the town's industrial growth.
