Ijūin Map Poster
Ijūin lies a short distance west of Kagoshima city in southern Kyushu. Since 2005 it has formed part of the merged city of Hioki, but it keeps a distinct identity and its own station on the Kagoshima Main Line. On a map the town centre gathers around the station and a few main roads, with residential streets filling the valley and rice fields and wooded hills closing in around the edges.
The town is closely tied to the Shimazu clan. Tokushige Shrine honours the warlord Shimazu Yoshihiro, and each autumn the Myōenji-mairi pilgrimage sees people in samurai armour walk from Kagoshima to the shrine, a tradition that goes back centuries. The shrine precinct appears on the map as a patch of green among the smaller streets.
