Īlām lies in a valley of the Zagros Mountains in western Iran, not far from the border with Iraq. The city is shaped by the terrain, stretching in a long band where the ground is level and stopping where the slopes rise. From above, the built-up area appears held between the mountains, with main roads running along the length of the valley.
Inside that band, a central grid of streets gives way to newer neighbourhoods climbing the lower hillsides. Green spaces and tree-lined roads stand out against the drier mountain slopes. Roads leave the valley toward the rest of the province and to the lowlands near the border, following gaps between the ridges.
Īlām is the capital of its province, and its population is largely Kurdish and Lur. The Qajar-era palace of the local governors, the Vali, still stands in the city. An Īlām map poster shows the city's close relationship with the mountains, with streets fitting into the space the landscape allows.
