Irará is a town in the interior of Bahia, north of Salvador and not far from Feira de Santana, in a landscape that sits between the humid coast and the drier sertão. On a map it looks compact and centred: a main square and church, a handful of streets leading away from them and then a quick shift to fields and rural roads.
The town is widely known as the birthplace of the musician Tom Zé, one of the key figures of Brazil's Tropicália movement.
