Iringa sits high in Tanzania's southern highlands, on a plateau that ends in a sharp escarpment above the Little Ruaha River. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets on the high ground. Roads fan out across the surrounding farmland, and the valley opens below. The contrast between the dense centre and the steep drop at its edge gives the plan an unusually clear outline.
The main highway linking Dar es Salaam with Zambia and the southern regions passes close to town. On a map it appears as a long, confident line cutting through smaller winding roads. Iringa is also known as the gateway to Ruaha National Park, one of the largest in Tanzania, which lies to the west. Many visitors pass through the town on their way there.
The area carries the memory of the Hehe people and their chief Mkwawa, who resisted German colonial forces in the 1890s.
