Iten is the main town of Elgeyo-Marakwet County in western Kenya, set at around 2,400 metres on the edge of the Kerio Valley escarpment. It has become known worldwide as a training base for distance runners, and a sign welcoming visitors to the Home of Champions greets arrivals.
The town is small, clustered along its main road with a modest grid of side streets. From above, the most dramatic feature is just to the east, where the land drops sharply into the Kerio Valley. Around the town, dirt roads and tracks cross farmland and forest, and these are the routes athletes run daily.
