Jamay lies at the eastern end of Lake Chapala in Jalisco, the largest natural freshwater lake in Mexico. From above, the town is a close grid of streets that ends at the water's edge. The lake spreads out to the west as a vast, flat surface, and cultivated fields fill the low ground inland, reaching toward the surrounding hills.
The town is known for its monument to Pope Pius IX, a tall column that rises above the main plaza and serves as a local landmark. Fishing on the lake has long been part of daily life. The shoreline, with its jetties and reed margins, forms the border between the town and the open water.
