Jerusalem is built on hills, and the map follows them. Roads run along ridgelines and curve around valleys, so few streets hold a straight line for long. The city spreads in lobes across the high ground, separated by green slopes and wadis that stay unbuilt. The result is an irregular, branching outline.
At the centre is the Old City, less than one square kilometre inside walls built in the sixteenth century under Suleiman the Magnificent. Its gates open onto the surrounding roads. Inside, narrow lanes divide into four traditional quarters. The Kidron and Hinnom valleys curve around its eastern and southern sides, and the Mount of Olives rises beyond.
Jerusalem is holy to Judaism, Christianity and Islam, and has been continuously inhabited for thousands of years. A light rail line now crosses the modern city. A Jerusalem map poster shows the walled square of the Old City, small and dense, surrounded by a much larger city shaped by its terrain.

Across the newer city, roads trace the hilltops and slopes. They create long curving lines and fingers of development between green valleys.
