Jiahanbage lies in southern Xinjiang, in the Hotan oasis region near the edge of the Taklamakan Desert. Water from the Kunlun Mountains to the south makes agriculture possible here. On a map, the landscape reads as a network of canals, fields and roads that stops abruptly where cultivation gives way to desert.
The settlement is spread across the oasis rather than concentrated in a single compact town. Houses follow roads and canals, often lined with poplars.
