Jinding lies in Lanping County in the Nujiang area of north-western Yunnan, in the rugged mountain country between the great river gorges of the region. It is best known for its lead-zinc deposit, one of the largest in China, and the town's development has been closely tied to the mine.
From above, the terrain determines everything. The built-up area follows the valley floor and the lower slopes, with streets running in narrow strips wherever the land allows. Winding roads climb away from the town, and the mining area forms large, stepped shapes in the hillsides nearby.
