Jitra lies in the north of Kedah, north of Alor Setar, in the flat lowland known for rice farming. The town is built along the main road north toward the Thai border, and the North–South Expressway passes close by. On the map, its streets are grouped around these routes, and the surrounding land is divided into paddy fields crossed by irrigation channels.
Jitra is also known historically as the site of the Battle of Jitra in December 1941, an early engagement of the Malayan campaign in the Second World War. Today it is the administrative centre of the Kubang Pasu district. It is a working town that serves the farms and villages around it.
