Joaçaba lies in the Midwest of Santa Catarina, in the deep valley of the Rio do Peixe. On a map the river snakes through the centre of the frame, and the town sits along its banks. Streets climb the steep slopes on both sides and switch back where the ground gets too steep. Across the water lies Herval d'Oeste, so the two towns form a single urban area joined by bridges.
The valley shape gives Joaçaba a linear plan, stretched along the river and the old railway line instead of spreading out evenly. The town is known across southern Brazil for its Carnival, one of the best-known in Santa Catarina, which fills the central streets every year.
