Kāgal is a town in Kolhapur district, in the south of Maharashtra, close to the border with Karnataka. The main highway linking Pune and Bengaluru passes right beside it, and from above the town appears as a dense older core with newer neighbourhoods and industrial plots spreading toward the road.
The town is closely tied to the history of Kolhapur. Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj, the social reformer and ruler of Kolhapur, was born in Kāgal into the Ghatge family before being adopted into the Kolhapur royal house. That connection still gives the town a place in the region's memory.
