Kaarta
Karaman sits on the broad, dry plain of south-central Anatolia. On a map, the city looks like a fairly compact core with roads spreading out across flat farmland in every direction. A small castle hill marks the historic centre, and the older quarters around it have narrow, irregular streets. Newer districts on the edges use wider, more regular blocks.
The city was once the seat of the Karamanid beylik, a medieval Turkish principality. In 1277 its ruler Karamanoğlu Mehmet Bey issued a decree making Turkish the language of court and government. The date is still marked in Turkey as Language Day. Mosques, madrasas and tombs from that period are spread through the old town.
On a Karaman map poster, the most striking thing is the contrast between the dense centre and the open land around it. The Taurus Mountains lie to the south, and the volcanic Karadağ, with its Byzantine church ruins known as Binbirkilise, rises to the north. The city itself stays low, a tight knot of streets on a wide plain.
The old citadel sits in the middle of the city, and the oldest streets curve around it in a tight, irregular pattern that is easy to pick out.
Straight roads head out across flat agricultural land, so the city's edges fade into long lines and field boundaries rather than hills or water.
Newer neighbourhoods on the edges use wide avenues and rectangular blocks, a clear contrast with the older lanes near the castle.
