Khān Yūnis is the principal city of the southern Gaza Strip, lying a short distance inland from the Mediterranean shore. Its map shows a close-knit centre where older streets gather, surrounded by broader blocks and, toward the west, a camp and neighbourhoods reaching out to the sandy coastal strip. Farmland and greenhouses have traditionally ringed the outskirts of the city.
The city grew around a fortified caravanserai built in the late fourteenth century under the Mamluks, a stop on the route between Egypt and Syria. Several roads run west from the centre toward the coast, crossing the camp area and the sandy strip near the shore. They give the composition a clear east–west direction.
