Khemis Miliana sits in the broad valley of the Chelif, Algeria's longest river, in the province of Aïn Defla. Above it, on the mountainside of the Zaccar, stands the older town of Miliana, while Khemis spreads across the plain below. The contrast is visible on any map: a hilltop settlement and a lowland town facing each other across a few kilometres of farmland.
The name refers to a Thursday market, khemis, which gave the town its early role as a meeting place for the farmers of the valley. Under French rule it was known as Affreville and was laid out on a regular plan. That colonial grid is still clear in the centre, with straight streets meeting at right angles and newer districts added around its edges.
The Chelif plain around the town is intensively cultivated, and fields, orchards and irrigation lines surround the built area in a patchwork of rectangles.
