La Calera sits just west of the city of Córdoba, at the point where the Sierras Chicas meet the plain. The Suquía river runs through here on its way from the hills to the city. That position between mountain and flatland shapes the whole map: regular streets to the east, and roads that climb and curve as the ground rises to the west.
The name means "the lime kiln". Lime and stone quarrying has been part of local life for centuries, and quarry sites still mark the hillsides. Upstream is the San Roque reservoir, and the Mal Paso diversion dam on the Suquía is nearby. Newer gated neighbourhoods have spread across the slopes, each with its own looping internal roads.
