Longlin lies in the mountainous south of Gansu province, a region of steep ridges, deep valleys and rivers running between them. In this terrain, settlements take on long, narrow shapes. Longlin's streets follow the valley floor, and the slopes above leave little room for the town to widen.
The surrounding countryside is rural, with villages and farmland placed wherever the land allows. Roads follow the rivers and valleys and link the town to other settlements in the region. From above, these routes appear as winding threads through largely empty mountain space.
