Longshan lies in eastern Gansu, in the heart of the Loess Plateau, one of the most distinctive landscapes in China. Seen from above, the land is heavily folded. Ridges and ravines cut by erosion spread in every direction, and the town sits where a valley floor offers enough flat ground for streets and buildings.
Roads here follow the valleys first and climb second. The main routes run along the lower ground, while smaller ones wind up the slopes toward villages and fields. Many hillsides are terraced, and on a detailed map those stepped fields appear as fine parallel lines following the contours.
