Majie is a town in southern Gansu Province, in China. It lies in the mountainous country where the Loess Plateau gives way to the ranges on the edge of Sichuan. As in most settlements in this terrain, the town follows the valley. On a map, it appears as a narrow band of streets and buildings along the flat ground next to a river.
The surrounding land dictates the shape. Steep slopes rise on both sides and leave little room for expansion, so the town grows lengthwise. Roads follow the valley, and smaller tracks climb into side valleys. Fields occupy terraces and patches of level ground wherever they can.
