Rather than a single compact centre, Makiyivka is made up of many districts that grew around individual coal mines and works, connected by roads and railway lines across open steppe. The city's history is closely tied to coal and steel, with mining beginning in the nineteenth century and a large metallurgical plant shaping its growth.
