Malajkhand lies in the Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh, in a hilly, forested part of central India. The town exists because of copper. The Malanjkhand copper project, operated by Hindustan Copper, is one of the largest open-pit copper mines in the country, and on a map the pit is impossible to miss: a great stepped hollow cut into the landscape.
Around the mine, the town is laid out with the practical logic of an industrial settlement.
