Malyn lies in the north of Zhytomyr Oblast, in the forested Polissia region, on the Irsha river. On a map, the river winds through the town and gives the street network an irregular, meandering spine. Neighbourhoods of low houses fan out along the riverbanks, and a few longer roads lead out toward the villages and woodland beyond.
