Mandlā is in eastern Madhya Pradesh, on the upper course of the Narmada River. From above its shape is striking: the river loops around the town on three sides, so the old settlement sits on a near-peninsula of land. On the map the wide river channel forms a strong, curving border around the streets.
The town was an important seat of the Gond kingdom, and remains of that period, including the palace at Ramnagar downstream, still stand in the area. Ghats line the riverbanks, and bridges cross the Narmada to newer districts. Mandlā district also includes much of Kanha National Park, one of India's best-known tiger reserves.
