Marion is the seat of Grant County in north-central Indiana, and from above it reads like many Midwestern towns: a square grid of streets laid over flat ground. What sets it apart is the Mississinewa River, which cuts through the town on a slant and pulls parks, bridges and bends of floodplain into an otherwise orderly plan.
The downtown sits around the courthouse square, with blocks of houses spreading outward in every direction until the grid thins into section-line roads and farm fields.
